Second Bus Tour - Cherokee Old Settlers Tour

JULY 23, 2010
Our second bus tour started in the Sallisaw area where our first stop was Sequoyah's cabin.  Sequoyah is best known for developing the Cherokee syllabary, which gave the Cherokees a written form of their language.

DWIGHT MISSION
Dwight Mission was one of the first Cherokee schools.  It is now used as a summer camp and conference center.

While at Dwight Mission I discovered that they had a Walkingstick Lodge, named for Maime Walkingstick, who grew up at Dwight Mission and later worked there for more than 20 years. (I'm not sure how, or if, I'm related to her.)

FORT GIBSON
Established in 1824, Fort Gibson served as a starting point for several military expeditions that explored the west and sought peace between the tribes in the region. It was occupied through most of the Indian Removal period then abandoned in 1857. The post was reactivated during the Civil War.
